HCI is taught to Yr. 4 of the BSc. in Computing (Hon) and is fast becoming a key feature of computer science study.
With performance no longer a distinguishing feature, attention is being focussed on the quality of the interaction and its concomitant knock-on effects in productivity, training and consequences of errors.
Psychology of Everyday Things
Donald Norman's book, though published in 1988 is still current today. His main focus is on the key principles of visibility and affordance.

the controls must first be visible and second, suggest the purpose for which
they are intended.
