Accessing WebCT for your subject.

IT Sligo uses a US website to hold course materials for a number of subjects. This service is provided by a company called WebCT. All the course materials, assignments and instructions for your subject ( eg. Information Technology) are held on this site. The URL address for the site is courses5.webct.com (Note that there is NO www at the front of that URL). You can access this from anywhere in the world with Internet access. When accessing this in IT Sligo, you must first of all login to the IT Sligo Local Area Network, then start your web browser, Internet Explorer, and then access the website courses5.webct.com . If you have never used the system before, you need to register on this website. To make it easier for you and your lecturer, students of IT Sligo should use their student number ( s000????) as a WebCT identity and use the same password as here in IT Sligo. To access your subject follow these instructions:

1. Start your web browser (Internet Explorer probably - the big blue e) and enter in courses5.webct.com in the address box and press 'Go'.(Spell the URL exactly and don't put www in front of courses5).
2. You now need to register on the WebCT site before accessing the subject. Follow these instructions:
   • Click on Create myWebCT
   • Fill in the form and bear in mind the following:
     • if you are an IT Sligo student your email address is your student number followed by @itsligo.ie e.g. s00099999@itsligo.ie (substitute the correct student number)
     • Your WebCT ID is the username you will be using in the WebCT site. For IT Sligo students, it should be the same as your IT Sligo user name which is your student number: s000?????
     • Use the same password that you have set up for the college IT Sligo network. Enter it twice.
     • In case you forget your password you can set a special question that the WebCT site will ask you when trying to login. If you know the answer it will allow you access. e.g. What is my grandmother's dog's name? Spot.
     • Click on Continue when finished
   • Now you have created your identity on the system. Next you must actually login. Enter in your ID (should be same as logging into the Institute system) and the password you chose. Click on the Login button.
   • Select Add course
   • Select the drop down triangle on the right of the Course Category box and select: Institute of Technology Sligo then select "Update"
   • Select the little pencil on the far right of line for your subject: (eg. Information Technology)
   • Select Return to My WebCT
   • In future, when you go to the website courses5.webct.com you will not have to register (Create MyWebCT) again. Instead you will just login. After you login you get a list of subjects that you are registered on. This is the screen that should be in fron of you now. You then select which subject that you want to enter (eg. Information Tecgnology)
3. Every time you access your subject, you should check the Calendar to see your work for the week, then note down in your workbook what you have to do (very briefly).
4. Don't forget to Logout from WebCT when finished or the next user may automatically get access to your WebCT course. Also don't forget to logout of the Institute network system before leaving. (Start - Shut down)
