Microsoft PowerPoint
A presentation package.
PowerPoint is a presentation package that allows you to create
'overheads' or 'slides' for giving a talk, presentation or lecture. If you have
never seen a set of PowerPoint slides,
view a simple set and close the browser when finished.
Exercise 1
- Select Programs from the Start menu, and then select
PowerPoint (This may be different in more up-to-date versions of
Windows)
- Select Blank presentation and then select OK
- You should now see a set of typical layouts for slides. The first
one which should be preselected is a typical opening page of a presentation.
The second one is a typical slide, with a heading and a set of points. Don't
worry if any of these is not quite the layout you want as you can change the
layout later.
- Choose the opening layout
and click on
OK
- A slide 'template' should now be displayed.
- Click where it says "Click to add title" and type in How to Boil
an Egg
- Click where it says "Click to add sub title" and type in your
name.
- Select the New Slide button on the toolbar:

- Select the standard slide layout:
and click on
OK
- Click where it says "Click to add title" and type in The
Procedure
- Click where it says "Click to add text" and type in the following
points:
- Take egg from fridge
- Place in pot
- Cover with cold water
- Bring to the boil
- Boil for 4 minutes
- Remove from pot
- Remove top
- Eat
- Now save the presentation on drive h: as ppex1
- Now we will try to improve the positions of the items on the slides:
- Click on the title area (The Procedure)
- Move the mouse pointer to the boundary (you should see 4 little
arrows appear indicating that you can move the title)
- Drag the boundary upwards. (hold the mouse button down and move
the mouse)
- Now click on the main list of items and move them upwards
also.
- Now lets resize the area containing the main list of items. Click on
the main list. At the corners and at the centre of each side of this are you
will see small squares. If you drag any of these you can pull the edge of the
area in any direction.
- Drag the centre one on the right hand edge inwards to the left as
far as it will go without effecting the text, to make the area smaller.
- Now lets draw an egg:
- Select Toolbars from the View menu.
- If the item called Drawing from the sub-menu does not have
a tick beside it then select it (otherwise click somewhere else - e.g. on your
slide). The Drawing toolbar should now be displayed.
- Select the Oval button
on the drawing
toolbar.
- Draw an ellipse on the right hand side of your slide by clicking
and dragging the pointer diagonally across the slide.
- Now lets try to insert an image (If you do not have any images go to
the lesson: Downloading from the web to see
how you can get some.:
- Select Picture from the Insert menu, and then
select From file from the sub-menu.
- Select drive h: from the Look in drop down menu.
- Select one of the images you previously saved in your personal
drive and then select Insert
- Now let's animate the text:
- Select the list of items (instructions for boiling an egg)
- Select Preset Animation from the Slide Show menu
and then select Drop In (In the latest version of PowerPoint this may be
different - experiment and see what you can do)
- To look at all the slides together, select the Slide Sorter
View button
from
the view toolbar on the bottom left.
- Now to view your presentation:
- Select the opening slide of the presentation.
- Select the Slide Show button
from the view
toolbar on the bottom left.
- After you view each stage, click the mouse anywhere on the screen
to move the presentation forward.
- When finished viewing the presentation, save it before you exit.
Assignment 1
Create a new presentation entitled: How to Fry and Egg. Save it
on drive h: as ppas1
Maybe you can find a picture of a fried egg on the Internet, but don't
spend too long searching (a drawing will be fine).
