Semi-final at The Ragg, Co. Tipperary; 27th February 1999 at 1 p.m.

IT Sligo 3-7 Dundalk IT 0-6 (h.t. 1-3 to 0-5)

This was IT Sligo’s first appearance at the Ryan and Fitzgibbon Cup Senior Hurling Championship weekend staged this year by the Garda Training College at Templemore in the heartland of hurling, Co. Tipp. Atrocious weather made conditions difficult at the Ragg pitch where the semi-finals of the Ryan Cup were played.

The first semi-final between UUC and Letterkenny IT was a hard-fought affair with the Coleraine college coming out on top by a scoreline of 2-2 to 0-5.

Sligo’s game was played immediately afterwards and proved to be a more exciting and entertaining game despite the strong wind and soft pitch. IT Sligo despite opting to play against the wind in the first half were leading at the break 1-3 to 0-5. Galway senior county star Padraic Walsh fired the sliothar over from an early free, and Stephen Broderick of Westport capped a fine first-half performance with two long-range scores from play. Andrew Howard from Belmullet tormented the Dundalk corner-back throughout and netted a well-worked goal before half-time.

After the recess Dundalk had a dominant 15 minute spell but were contained to one point, their last score. The final quarter belonged to Sligo with points coming from Howard, Walsh, Karl Fogarty from Wolfe Tones Shannon, and prolific full forward David Clarke.

Howard also added an opportunist goal and Clarke finished Dundalk off with a goal following a severe defensive lapse.

Kieran Frawley and the rest of the half back line where outstanding throughout. Goalie Padraig O ‘ Leary, captain Mike Finn and Alan Broderick from Ballinasloe also impressed. Best for Dundalk was Kilkenny man Dick Teelan who was a match for Padraic Walsh.

Higher Education Ryan Cup Hurling Weekend at Garda Training College, Templemore.

Final at Templemore, Co. Tipperary; Sunday 28th February 1999 at 1.30 p.m.

IT Sligo 1-5 UUC 0-5 (h.t. 1-0 to 0-3)

A sudden change of venue to switch the game from the Town Park pitch at Templemore ,where the Fitzgibbon Final was to be held, to the Garda pitch meant that the game was played on an almost unplayable surface. Both Fitzgibbon semi-finals had been held there on Saturday and heavy overnight rain worsened an already badly cut-up pitch.

The conditions ensured that the game would be low-scoring and the effectiveness of both teams’ half-back line further influenced the final score. Galway county star Padraic Walsh was unavailable being on county duty at the NHL match in nearby Birr.

The first half provided the spectators with a resolute display of hurling by both teams with Coleraine having the upper edge in terms of possession. However despite having the wind advantage they were restricted to three scores, including an early free from towering wing-back Gearoid O’ Mainin. This was due to a determined and skilful display from all the Sligo backs, whose excellent clearances were rewarded when Dave Clarke scored a fine goal in the seventh minute. Both teams clocked up as number of wides in the increasingly treacherous surface conditions.

In the second half the Sligo forwards gained the upper hand following a number of key switches, with man-of-the-match Liam Kerrigan scoring three super points from play and Stephen Broderick adding two from long-range, including a free. The Sligo backs continued to fight for every ball and restricted the University side to two long-range points. UUC laid siege on the Sligo goal for a short spell mid-way through the half with Padraic O’Leary outstanding in goal. Noel Ryan, Ger Clarke, Mike Finn and Kieran Frawley were inspirational in defence. Frawley received the award for outstanding player of the Ryan Cup weekend. Team captain Michael Finn dedicated the win to the memory of former IT Sligo player Shane McGrath who tragically died last year.
