Exploring the Field Fences of County Sligo
The Field Fences Project is a Schools Integration Project (SIP 061) which seeks to encourage an exploration of local heritage through the theme of field fences utilising information and communications technology (ICT). Eight Primary schools and one Post-Primary school in County Sligo participated in the Project.

"From Skerrydoo to Carrickfadda".

A study of the Irish Coastline. A Schools Heritage and IT Project for County Sligo.www.sligoseashore.com.
The Sligo Education Centre in partnership with the Heritage Office, Sligo County Council ran this Heritage and IT schools project for County Sligo, seeking to build on the success of the Sligo Fieldfences Project.
During October 2001, twelve primary schools began exploring their own coastal heritage through utilising IT and heritage resources.
In building a programme of support for the schools involved, visits were arranged by a local heritage expert to each school involved in the project, during the period November 2001 to February 2002.
An important aspect of the lecture series was the opportunity to involve not only the teachers and senior classes in the school but also the parents and members of the local community.
In doing so, it was hoped to provide a real opportunity for community involvement in the schools project, while developing an outreach programme which seeks to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of the local heritage resource.
In this regard Bill Crowe participated in the lecture programme giving a talk and slide show to St. John's National School, Ballisodare, Co. Sligo, and to all the teachers involved in the project at The Sligo Education Centre.

This project "From Skerrydoo to Carrickfadda" won first prise in the European eLearning Awards 2003, out of a total entry of 600 projects.

The projects involved more than 300 pupils from 12 Primary Schools in County Sligo.

The Schools involved were Cliffoney, Ballyweelin, Rathcormac, St. Edward's St. Brendan's, Strand hill, Ballisodare, Ballinlig, Kilrusheighter, Highpark, Rathlee and Enniscrone.

The National Heritage Council News Letter

www.marinedimensions.ie a new online outreach resource (www.marinedimensions.ie) has just been launched with support from the Heritage Council and Dunlaoghaire Rathdown CEB. The site aims to raise awareness for Ireland's marine environmental heritage and focuses on a target audience that would have little knowledge of Ireland's marine biodiversity. It is also being developed as a teaching aid for schools and adult education work, and ultimately it is hoped that it may serve as a useful sustainable resource for marine educators. The site is particularly concerned with raising awareness for fauna and flora that have received little attention to date, eg. corals, non-commercial fish species, plankton etc. If you are involved in a marine environmental project that you would like to draw the publics attention to (ie. something that could be easily communicated to either (a) primary school children, (b) senior school level (particularly Transition Year students) or (c) adult education interest groups, Dr. Sarah Varian would really like to hear from you. The site could provide good publicity for your project with logos and links to your own site, whilst it could be an opportunity for your work to reach a wider audience.
Contact details: Dr. Sarah Varian, Zoologist, Marine Dimensions,
PO Box 9696, Dublin 18,
Tel: 01 2898480. E-Mail: sarah@marinedimensions.ie

Sarah is also one of the Marine Biology Heritage Specialists on the Heritage in Schools Scheme, run by the Heritage Council in partnership with the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO).

Kate Thorne is hoping to be able to tap into some divers, fishermen, or boatmen's local knowledge of the Donegal/Sligo/North Mayo region. She is working on a project with Trinity College Dublin and BIM on brown crab, Cancer pagrus in Donegal & North Mayo.

More specifically she is looking at the ecology of juvenile crabs. She is doing an MSc/PhD on development of recruitment indices for the brown crab. Her research is focused in the Donegal region. The project is being run between Trinity College (Martin Robinson) and BIM (Ollie Tully). Basically she is looking for brown crab nursery sites.

Previous research in Wexford has shown that juvenile brown crab are most abundant in areas with complex substrates such as cobble with algal cover. As part of the project there has been seabed surveys carried out around the Malin Head region, and there are plans to possibly do some more surveying in Broadhaven Bay. It is hoped this information will allow work to be focused in on certain areas, but any first hand experiences would be very helpful.

Again, ideal sites, where she believes that they may inhabitat, would be shallow, sheltered inshore areas with complex bottom types like cobbles and algae. She need to find some sites fitting this description to dive during late spring to autumn. With regards to depth the sites would need to be 10m or shallower, and if she could dive from the shore that would be ideal. Alternatively fishing boats might have to be used. With your knowledge of the North West region she was hoping some of your club members, friends or associates may know of specific areas where she might try? Perhaps even someone has remembered seeing a lot of small brown crab somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any queries of a local nature, or local information on any marine topics, including the crabs, you may contact Bill Crowe at this web site, and I will answer or help any way I can, and keep the crab information for Kate and pass it on to her.
