This was a real team effort! as can be seen by the number of players who have scored goals.
Yeats United U12 Pannel, with Goals Scored as single web pageOn Saturday 20 th March, at our home ground in Carney (kick-off 2.15pm) Yeats United Boys Under 12 Team played our last league match, beating Real Tubber 3 - 1, qualifying for the knock-out section, in second position in our section of the league (stage 2, group 1), having lost one match to Ballisodare United, and won all the rest.
Four teams qualify from each of the two sections for the knock-out section; Team 1 plays team four from the other section, team 2 plays team 3 etc.
Four members of the Development squad had to be subbed up to the panel for this last match, due to Patrick's week holidays and other sporting commitments. The team played very well, passing excellently in a fast moving game, creating many chances, but were not clinical at the final stages, scoring the goals.
Darragh McClosky, our reluctant goaly for the day, forced into this position because our normal goal keeper Cian Feeny and reserve keeper were away, played very well, making two magnificent goal stopping saves. I have to apologise to him for keeping him in goals for the second half, after promising to take him out, but the three other players tall enough to be useful in the large goals were necessary to win balls in mid-field and defence and all three were succeeding very well, and we never got far enough in the lead to risk moving one of them into goals. The two managers felt that in the interest of the whole team and a favourable result for the team, we reluctantly would be unfair to Daragh and keep him in goals, as we have done under pressure on another occasion with Sam White (who was away on this occasion). However, Daragh, who had just returned from a hip injury, did the Team a great service in goals.
The goal scorers (in order of scoring) were Sean Power, Ruan Feeney, and Ross McCarty (one of the Development players).
In the Quarter Finals of the Knock-out section we were drawn away from home for the match against Strand Celtic Football Club, who had qualified 3rd place in the other section of the league (stage 2, group 1).
The match took place on Monday 12th April at 6.30pm. In an evenly contested match we were beaten 2 goals to 1. Strand Celtic FC took more of their goal chances than did, and some of our players did not play or pass as well as usual.
There may also have been an expectation of winning among the players, given the previous results and final positions in the league, and the fact that we started slow in each half but finished the stronger.
Our strongest players on the day were Sam White and Sean Power in defence and David Brady and Cian Doyle in mid field. Cian Doyle was moved to attack for the last 20 minutes and scored our only goal.
We had our greatest turn out of pannel members ever; the full 16 active pannel players and 2 Development players (who had played with us previously). All 7 subs were given a game on the night.
Our highest goal scorer for the season was Cian Doyle (with 8), followed by William Crowe and Roan Feeny (both with 6); but a feature of this team was the large numbers of players who scored gouls spread over a large spread of playing position, probably because of the strong passing game played by the team, often involving 2 touch football (see scoring chart for details).
We are calling this the end of the season and do not intend to train any more this season. We may play a couple of friendly games later on if players are still interested and if players and coaches have enough time with other community games and summer activities starting. Most players and also the two managers expressed an interest in continuing next year with the club. Two of the original pannel of 16, Roan Feeny and Caolin Carty will be available for two more years on the U12 pannel, to be joined by members of the Development Pannel; the rest will be moving up to the U14.
Declan McGarry one of the managers of the present U14 teams will probably remain as manager of the U14 next season, as his son Jude McGarry will still be available for that age group (along with about 6 other members of the present U14 team.At an End of Year Reception for this moderately successful U12 team the following awards were made (presented by the team managers Bill Crowe and Aidan Doyle):
Best Attacker: Top Goal Scorer Cian Doyle
Best Mid-Fielder: Second highest Goal Scorer William Crowe
Best Defender: Sam White
Most Improved player Sean Power
