Skreen/Dromard Community Council Envioremental Group Trip to the Rocky part of Dunmoran strand, Co. Sligo on Sunday 16th November 2008:

Photographs taken near strand

People (adults & children alike) were delighted with the day! A large crowd turned out for a slide show and demonstration, followed by a field trip to explore the seashore at Dumoran Strand.
Chilren and adults waded through the rock pools observing and touching with awe the huge variety of beautifully coloured and intricately structured seaweed, sponges, sea anemones, worms, crabs, starfish, shellfish and fish, each interacting with one another. Bill Crowe explained in simple terms how the dynamics of the physical (tides, rocks, wave exposure) and biological components (competition and predation among animals and plants, and their adaptations for surviving here) of this semi-exposed rocky seashore habitat, integrated together and worked, creating this unique bio-diverse ecosystem.
Following the shore excursion, some small barnacles and starfish were brought back to the community centre, where their intricate movement and feeding activities in seawater were monitored under microscopes in amazement. In addition, unique preserved specimens of bizar 'rat-tailed' deep sea fish and invertebrates, originally living 3 miles down, were viewed and handled and the functioning of various marine faunal collecting and sampling gear was demonstrated and explained.
