Sligo Sub-Aqua Club Field Trip to the Rocky part of "The Horseshoe" Bay at Ballyconnell Seashore, Co. Sligo, on Saturday 13 June 2009
A. To study the Geology of the Region, lead by Dr. Richard Thorn; and
B. To study the Fauna and Flora of the Region, lead by Dr. Bill Crowe:
Photographs taken by Dr. John Williams; taken near the strand, while Bill was demonstrating some Deep Sea fish and Invertebrates

These unique preserved specimens of bizar 'rat-tailed' deep sea fish and invertebrates, originally living 3 miles deep, were obtained at the Porcupine Bight off the West Coast of Ireland, over thirty years ago.

Bill Crowe explained in simple terms how the dynamics of the physical (tides, rocks, wave exposure) and biological components (competition and predation among animals and plants, and their adaptations for surviving here) of this exposed rocky seashore habitat, integrated together and worked, creating this unique ecosystem. However, the real gems lie underwater at this exposed site. This is one of the best dive sites in Ireland, for marine life, and is one of the sites frequently dived by Sligo Sub-Aqua Club (and by other clubs from all round Ireland), when wind conditions are calm enough.
Semi-exposed rocky sea-shore sites, like those of nearby Raughley, have a greater diversity of marine life.
Adults observed, and Chilren waded through! the rock pools, touching with awe the large variety of beautifully coloured and intricately structured seaweed, sea anemones, snails, crabs, and urchins, each interacting with one another. People (adults & children alike) were delighted with the day!
